Victor MacFarlane Presented with
Distinguished Business Leadership Award
by the USC Architectural Guild

Victor B. MacFarlane, chairman and chief executive officer of MacFarlane Partners, was presented with the 2019 Distinguished Business Leadership Award at the 60th USC Architectural Guild Annual Dinner held on April 24 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.
Mr. MacFarlane was one of three individuals honored during the dinner program, which was hosted by the Architectural Guild and the USC School of Architecture as a fundraiser to support student scholarships and programming at the school.
Also honored were Corinne Verdery, executive vice president of development for Caruso, who was presented with the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award; and Gin D. Wong, FAIA, who was posthumously presented with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr. MacFarlane, who has 40 years of real estate investment and development experience, founded MacFarlane Partners in 1987 as one of the first African American-owned real estate investment management firms in the United States. He pioneered the urban investment concept among institutional real estate managers in 1996, when his firm teamed with Earvin “Magic” Johnson to form the first institutional real estate venture dedicated to urban properties.
Since that time, Mr. MacFarlane and his firm have become industry leaders in urban/smart-growth development, having invested in $13 billion in urban properties that total eight million square feet of commercial space and 15,000 multifamily housing units in major cities nationwide on behalf of some of the world’s largest pension funds and institutions, as well as for its own account.
Property developments in which his firm has invested have won design and other awards from such organizations and publications as the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties, the Los Angeles Business Council, the San Francisco Business Times and Los Angeles Downtown News. Two properties—the Hotel & Residences at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles and the Time Warner Center in New York City—earned the prestigious Global Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute, an honor bestowed each year on a select number of properties worldwide.
“Victor is an accomplished leader whose work intersects real estate development, business, social equity and urbanism, and we are excited to honor his achievements at this year’s Annual Dinner,” said Milton S. F. Curry, dean of the USC School of Architecture, in a statement prior to the event. “Victor’s ethos has been delivering formidable investment returns with a commitment to design quality and socially innovative and community-driven developments. His approach and integrity have made him a role model to diverse and emerging design and development professionals.”
Mr. MacFarlane is one of the founding members of the Real Estate Executive Council, a professional trade organization that promotes the interests of minority real estate executives. He currently serves as an emeritus board member of REEC and sits on the advisory board of directors of the Robert Toigo Foundation, a non-profit organization that fosters the career advancement and financial-leadership presence of under-represented business talent. He also serves on the board of advisers for the UCLA School of Law.
Mr. MacFarlane holds a juris doctor degree from UCLA, a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and a bachelor’s degree in university studies from the University of New Mexico.
